Program Information
The Municipal Heritage Partnership Program and the Historic Places Initiative
The Municipal Heritage Partnership Program is part of a larger culture of conservation being fostered across the country through the Historic Places Initiative.
Since 1999, a pan-Canadian heritage program has been in development to help conserve the historic places of Canada. The provinces and territories of Canada, in collaboration with the federal government, have created a program to recognize and manage Canada’s historic resources. This program is called the Historic Places Initiative (HPI). HPI includes tools to help recognize and protect historic places. Its primary tools are the provincial and national registers of historic places, and The Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, which guides conservation and alteration of historic buildings. The national heritage register is called The Canadian Register of Historic Places; Alberta’s register is called The Alberta Register of Historic Places.

MHPP A New Direction
The MHPP is a municipality’s gateway to the tools and programs of the Historic Places Initiative and Heritage Resource Management Branch within Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture, and offers resources to get started through program cost-sharing agreements.
The MHPP supports the development of municipal heritage management programs such as:
1. Surveys, which gather information about all of the potential historic resources in a municipality and identify what types of resources it has;
2. Inventories, culminating from surveys that recognize through evaluation, and aid in the management of, those places in a municipality which are significant for their heritage value;
3. Municipal heritage management plans and policies that guide historic place management practices.
4. Municipal designation of historic places for inclusion on the Alberta and Canadian Registers of Historic Places.
See the Heritage Planning Resources MHPP Projects section for more information
The Government of Canada, in collaboration with Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture, makes funding for this program possible. To be eligible for conservation funding, a place must be protected through designation and placed on the Alberta and Canadian Registers of Historic Places. For further information on designation and mandatory documentation please see the Heritage Planning Resources Designation section
